Gastroparesis-Friendly Baking eBook

Back in 2011, I wrote the Gastroparesis-Friendly Baking eBook with fifty or so low-fat, low-fiber recipes for cookies, cakes, breads, and desserts. While it had been a labor of love as a lifelong baker, and quite popular as a paid download, I took it off of my website a couple of years later after I started following (and often recommending) a fairly strict Paleo-type diet that didn’t allow for these types of baked goods.

In hindsight, it’s become clear to me that that kind of rigidity around eating for gastroparesis is usually unnecessary and very often counter-productive. (Lots more about that in the latest edition of Eating for Gastroparesis.)

There have been many requests to make the Baking eBook available again and the stumbling block has been finding the time to update it to ensure the recipes still work, the ingredients are still available, and it reflects my current viewpoints (and vastly improved design skills!). But rather than keep it on the shelf indefinitely, I’ve decided to simply release the original 2011 version for free.

Because it was written over a decade ago, some of the ingredients, particularly specific low-fat products, may be hard to find. On the flip side, there are now a variety of readily accessible ingredients for those like me, who feel best on a gluten-free or dairy-free diet. While the majority of the recipes in this book weren’t written to be dairy- or gluten-free, in most cases you can easily substitute:

  • almond, soy, or oat milk (avoid full-fat oat milk) for cow’s milk

  • almond, soy, or oat milk plus apple cider vinegar for buttermilk (1 Tbsp vinegar to 1 cup milk)

  • softened coconut oil for butter

  • all-in-one gluten-free flour for regular flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Baking Flour)

  • Enjoy Life chocolate chips (free of dairy, gluten, and a dozen other allergens)

If you’ve read my other books, you know that I still think it’s essential to prioritize nutrition in a gastroparesis-friendly diet. But that doesn’t mean there’s no place for treats. Pleasure and enjoyment matter, too, and I hope that’s what these recipes bring you!
